MAXIMISES THE BENEFITS.

The efficiency of the BMW X5.

There are several reasons for the power and efficiency of the BMW X5: fuel-saving petrol and diesel engines, sophisticated aerodynamics – and a whole range of other BMW EfficientDynamics measures.

Maximum performance for minimumm fuel consumption.

Whether the goal is maximum performance or minimum fuel consumption – for us, the focus is always on delivering quintessential BMW driving pleasure.
BMW EfficientDynamics is the strategy developed by BMW to minimise fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously increasing dynamics and driving pleasure. It is a comprehensive technology package that includes the drive train, energy management and the vehicle concept – and is standard in every BMW.
The new generation of petrol and diesel engines in the BMW TwinPower Turbo family is responsible for the improved performance and lower fuel consumption. Optimised aerodynamics, along with intelligent lightweight construction, contribute to increased efficiency. The latter lowers the weight while at the same time increasing the car's rigidity. The BMW concept of intelligent lightweight construction involves deploying the right material in the right place, because every material has its specific strengths. This is a demonstration of the impressive innovation leadership at BMW, the only major car manufacturer that relies on ultralight and highly rigid carbon fibre (CFRP) as a key material. BMW also focuses on forward-thinking drive train concepts such as the BMW eDrive technology with a 100 % electric drive train and plug-in hybrids.

    BMW CONCEPT X5 EDRIVE

In the BMW Concept X5 eDrive, the innovative EfficientDynamics drive technology BMW eDrive and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive are united for the first time. The combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder combustion engine and a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor provides typical BMW driving pleasure, with BMW xDrive further increasing the dynamics. At the same time, this dynamic duo is impressively efficient: The average consumption of less than 3.8 l/100 km in the EU test cycle is unrivalled among vehicles in this class, with CO2 emissions of less than 90 grammes per kilometre also setting new standards. Via the driving modes, the drive characteristics can be regulated individually. In the fully electric mode, which is free from local emissions, a range of up to 30 km is possible – at speeds of up to 120 km/h.

    ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
Another five per cent can be saved by the additional functions of coasting, preview assistant and ECO PRO Route. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.
Another feature of the ECO PRO mode is the coasting function: If no driving power is required within a speed range of 50 km/h to 160 km/h, the system disconnects the engine and the car coasts.
The preview assistant in conjunction with Navigation System Professional is an especially innovative highlight of ECO PRO mode. Based on navigation data, it detects bends, built-up areas, roundabouts, T-junctions, speed limits and motorway exits along the route and is able to give you tips in advance to enable you to reduce speed early on.
ECO PRO mode also includes ECO PRO Route which combines with the new generation of Navigation system Professional to draw on various parameters such as individual driving style as well as the current traffic situation and road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage, in other words how many additional kilometres you have gained from using ECO PRO mode.

    AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.

    BMW X5 SDRIVE25D.

The BMW X5 sDrive25d is the most efficient version of the model range. Rather than all-wheel drive, the BMW X5 sDrive25d has rear-wheel drive. It is not least the weight benefit deriving from this that gives it such low fuel consumption and emission levels. With 160 kW (281 hp), the BMW X5 sDrive25d offers a dynamic drive – with a fuel consumption of a mere 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Despite this fuel efficiency, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive 8.2 seconds.

    EU6 EMISSION NORM.

The pioneering technologies in the BMW X5 engines already meet the strict EU6 emission norm.
BMW engines have always been ahead of their time because they have been the core competency of BMW since 1917. The engines in the BMW X5 provide particularly impressive proof of this. With outstanding performance, spontaneous response and commendably smooth running, it meets the highest standards of driving comfort.
Another reason to look forward with confidence is BMW BluePerformance technology, which is standard in all diesel models. Thanks this technology, it has been possible to optimise the emissions response of diesel engines even further. In addition to the diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, there is also an NOx catalyst storage which further reduces the level of nitric oxide in the exhaust gas. A further method of nitric oxide reduction is also used: the SCR catalytic converter (SCR = Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue Injection. A chemical reaction triggered by injection of the urea solution AdBlue greatly reduces nitric oxide emissions. In this way, you can be sure that you drive one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world with greatly reduced exhaust emissions that meet the requirements of the strict EU6 emissions norm as standard.
