INTELLIGENT ON-ROAD COMPANIONS.
BMW ConnectedDrive Driver Assistance systems in the BMW X5.
The best co-pilots you could wish for. The Driver Assistance systems in the BMW X5 have one primary aim − to make sure you enjoy a relaxing drive and a safe arrival.
The control display screens show the new user interface design expected to be available in October 2016.
TRAFFIC JAM ASSISTANT.
Traffic jam assistant eases the burden on the driver during monotonous driving situations. At speeds of up to 60 km/h, the system lets the car simply "glide along" with the other cars in dense traffic situations, making traffic jams less stressful. It automatically maintains the desired distance from the vehicle ahead and regulates the car's speed down to standstill, as well as providing active steering support. The vehicle is therefore able to help the driver stay in the correct lane, as long as the driver keeps at least one hand on the wheel. Having been at a complete standstill for up to 30 seconds, the car automatically starts moving again. Another milestone on the path to achieving highly automated driving.
BMW HEAD-UP DISPLAY.
The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects all information relevant to the journey directly into the driver's field of vision, allowing them to fully concentrate on driving. The display includes data such as the current speed and – depending on the equipment – navigation tips, Speed Limit Info incl. no-overtaking indicator, telephone and entertainment lists, along with information and warnings from the various driver assistance systems. The icons projected onto the windscreen are displayed in a particularly high resolution and in full colour. The image's projection appears as if it were approx. 2.3 m in front of the vehicle. This, in combination with optimal positioning, allows the information to be read quickly, conveniently and with minimal distraction. The brightness of the projection automatically adjusts to suit the external light conditions, with different displays for day and night, and the height of the display can also be adjusted. Furthermore, the driver can also select which information to display in addition to the current speed and warnings from the driver assistance systems.
NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL.
The Navigation system Professional features a sleek design and a superior range of services: It delivers a simple and easy-to-use navigation system that is seamlessly integrated into the BMW, including the iDrive operating concept and iDrive Touch Controller. The system comprises the hands-free facility with USB interface and voice control, radio BMW Professional with DVD drive, as well as 20 GB of memory for audio files. It also facilitates the use of Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI). The built-in 10.25" LCD colour display with split screen function (main and supplementary screen) is designed for optimal readability and clarity.
The iDrive Touch Controller with direct menu control buttons, eight functional bookmarks and voice control makes operation intuitive by allowing you to enter the address of your destination in handwriting on its touch-sensitive surface. Thanks to the three-dimensional map display that makes use of satellite images as a map background – with photo-realistic depictions of selected sights – navigation becomes an exciting visual experience.
Map updates are available at BMW dealerships for three years without license fees. Within the framework of BMW ConnectedDrive, in selected European countries the system automatically updates the maps for three years up to four times per year.
iDRIVE TOUCH CONTROLLER
The iDrive Touch Controller (part of navigation system Professional) enables the Control Display to be conveniently operated with a single hand. Thanks to the touchpad integrated into the Controller, it is easy to enter information such as destinations for the navigation system in handwriting. The Controller can also be rotated and pressed to access many functions, change various settings and scroll through lists. It can be easily and intuitively operated, as it is based on one's sense of touch. This makes life especially easy for the driver since it keeps distraction from traffic to an absolute minimum. All functions operated using the Controller can be viewed clearly in the Control Display.
BMW NIGHT VISION WITH DYNAMIC LIGHT SPOT.
BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot can detect people and larger animals at night – even at a significant distance – and illuminate them.
An infrared camera mounted on the BMW kidney grille transmits images of people and animals directly onto the Control Display. Intelligent early warning system with a bright outlook: As soon as the infrared sensors detect pedestrians or larger animals on a potential collision course in the dark, the system directs two separately controlled Dynamic Light Spots onto them, without any unpleasant dazzling effect. This light ensures that both the driver and the person approaching are very effectively warned of a potentially hazardous situation.
The driver receives additional warnings on the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display or on the instrument cluster if the thermal imaging display has been activated. If there is an acute risk of collision with detected individuals or animals, an acoustic alarm is also sounded and the brakes are prepared for imminent action. BMW Night Vision with Dynamic Light Spot is an innovation from BMW ConnectedDrive.
The Park Assistant makes it easier for you to find a suitable parking space and actively helps you park.
The fully automatic Park Assistant represents the latest generation of parking comfort in a BMW. In this generation, the system selects the forward or reverse gear, takes control of steering and automatically accelerates or brakes as necessary. Prior to the parking manoeuvre, the driver merely has to turn on the indicator and then keep the PDC button pressed during the entire parking procedure, along with monitoring the surrounding area with the help of the automatically activated Rear View camera. Once the manoeuvre has been completed, the system selects the P driving position. When travelling at speeds of up to 35 km/h and with a maximum distance of 1.5 m from the row of parked cars, the ultrasound sensors in the BMW use the Control Display to show potential gaps where it would be possible to parallel park in a roadside space.
Surround View provides support when parking and manoeuvring in tight situations. To this end, the area to the side of the car and behind it are shown in the Control Display from a bird's-eye perspective (360° Top View).
Side View is also included, providing support in areas where there is poor visibility (e.g. exits, blind junctions). Two digital cameras to the front left and right of the automobile capture the situation at the side and relay it to the Control Display. This enables early detection of cross-traffic, resulting in the appropriate reaction.
With the rear view camera you have the area behind the car in view on the Control Display while manoeuvring and parking. The Rear View camera enhances visibility when reversing at speeds below 20 km/h, for example when parking. Interactive track lines indicate to you whether the chosen parking space is big enough for the car and support you during parking by showing areas marked in colour on the Control Display. In conjunction with the tow hitch, the reverse view camera has a practical zoom function which makes the approach easier when hooking up a trailer.
It is possible to choose between the three options Rear View Camera, Surround View and Side View and to activate one of them. The selected view then appears in the Control Display.
BMW SELECTIVE BEAM
With BMW Selective Beam, driving at night is more comfortable and safer. It provides excellent visibility in the dark without dazzling other drivers.
The system detects other road-users and selectively excludes them from the high-beam headlight distribution. Beam ranges of 400 m ensure early detection of risks and improved directional tracking.
